Alexa Updates its Ranking Algorithm
Posted on April 16th, 2008 by Reid under Daily RamblingsI arrived home tonight after my second exam (Yay!, 2 out of 5 exams done) to notice that John Cow’s Alexa rank jumped from 22,100 to over 100k. I went and checked out Alexa and it says that they have updated their ranking system.
After a few minutes checking Alexa ranks on various sites, I can tell you the following. Quite a few forums benefited from this update, while bloggers seem to have been hurt by the update. JohnChow went from 5k to 16k, but surprisingly mine increased a little bit.
I think this update goes to show you how unreliable of traffic stats Alexa produces. I like to look at it for comparison to other sites Alexa ranks, but I certainly wouldn’t rely on its stats. I know a forum earning 500k a year that had an Alexa rank of 80k, while with the update it went up to 50k. This forum usually has 500+ users online at a time, it should definitely have a higher rank.
You can read the full details of the Alexa update here.

I noticed my sites ranking went up a little bit as well. I’m a bit confused though on why though. I got more visitors then before..

I noticed I dropped about 60k from this morning, but I am hearing rumors that certain things can now get (mostly bloggers) penalized. Im not putting alot of stock into it, but it has something to do with the way your linked to and how often from where. We shall see I am sure.

Congrats on improving your rank.
It takes time to build the ranks like COw -n- Chow.
Keep working and your blog will be the next cash cow…….pun intended.

Why are bloggers being penalized?
Wow, that probably won’t help johncow’s third attempt at selling his site.

Seems to be a welcome change, i jumped from 1,000,000 to 800k! so im happy

@don, the sale bounced. It was a false BIN.
One funny think with the update, my Alexa traffic says 75% Philippines and 50% other countries, thats 125% lol. Plus, hardly any traffic comes from there, its around 45% US.

Alexa ratings are worthless. Completely and utterly worthless. Until people understand this, web sites such as DigitalPoint will continue to be filled with worthless information about “boosting your Alexa rank,” etc. This ranking is only a measure of traffic WITHIN THE DEMOGRAPHIC THAT WOULD INSTALL THEIR TOOLBAR.

I heared the announcement that alexa has changed its ranking algorithm. I am little happy with this change because my website got little improvment. see new alexa ranking for http://www.alexa.com/data/details/main?url=www.fortunehotels.in Fortune Park Hotels Ltd.

My website went up minimally, however, now it is on a steady downward change, even though the number of alexa users has gone up, and the number of overall users has gone up. WTF? Any ideas?
