Its pointless to read big name bloggers!
Posted on May 4th, 2008 by Reid under Daily Ramblings, Make Money OnlineI first started making some decent money online back in November of last year. I started to read some of the big name blogs such as John Chow, John Cow, Tyler Cruz, Shoemoney, etc. I’d like to warn anyone that reads these blogs that reading them is a waste of your time! They will not help you earn any money online! Why’s that?
They are already making good money online - The bigname bloggers meantioned above are already making good money off there blogs. Tyler Cruz is earning $1400+ a month from his blog alone while John Chow is earning over $30,000 a month from his blog. They already have sites making very good money and have no need to post about there progress.
Their posts are hardly relevent - Lets take a look at JohnChow.com first. If you read most of his posts, you will find paid reviews, posts about his dinners, and lots of stuff. None of them will really tell you how to make money online. As his header says, he makes money online by telling you how much money he makes. Now lets look at Tyler Cruz, a fairly sucessful web entrepreneur. He has over 1500 RSS subscribers but almost none of his posts will tell you how to make money online. If you look at his most recent posts, you will see ones telling you how much money his blog is making, ones about his vacation and his server crash and even more paid reviews, but do any of them give beginners tips to make money online. Again, the answer to that is no. I could go on forever with this post talking about MMO blogs which won’t help the readers, but that would end up getting boring.
Why you should read newer blogs - I tend to subscribe to newer blogs such as The University Kid, The Net Fool, etc because they are newer to the MMO niche, yet they blog about their progress making money online. These guys are the ones who will provide you with first hand information about making money online. You can follow their successses and failures, while a big name blogger will only bloat about how much they are already making and not help out the reader.
With MooneyQuest, I will try and guide you guys to make money online. I have written one major tutorial so far and will have many more to come with ways that you can make money online.
As for the contest, I will be tallying up the entries and picking the winners within the next day or so. Stay tuned for the announcement of the winners.

Psh. Please.
I am so much more successful than the “big names” like John Chow. John Chow reads my blog and copies my investing ideas, enough said. If you really want to make money, you need to read theNetFool.com… that’s the bottom line.

I fully agree. I used to read John Cow, but I have recently deleted him from my bookmarks.

I wouldn’t say its totally pointless. Sometimes they make mistakes and we can learn from those mistakes.
I read John Cow, Tyler Cruz, and Shoemoney… I would agree that Shoemoney blog is pointless to read. Its like one big store.
New bloggers I read your blog, infectedbybugs, and sometimes I read my own to see why people read my blog.

It is true what you said. And lots of people tell us this. Things like “don’t spend your time reading a-listing blogs.” The closest blog I read to an a-lister is The University Kid. Now here you were talking about how to read blogs that tell you how to make money online, but also it is better to comment on smaller blogs for they will become long term readers.

I too agree with the facts that big names brag about themselves and many people including me just follow each talk of theirs!
Should be serious with our own earnings and try to focus more on bloggers who are on your level.

I wrote about exactly this today, immediately before I read your blog
I honestly think that reading things like John Chow will be a complete waste of time, spend that time doing something GOOD! xD

People just visit A-list blogs to try and get themselves noticed. The problem is there are so many trying that same thing it makes it useless. Agree that it is pointless, but most new MMO bloggers do it and that is what keeps the sites on the A-list.

Maybe Johnchow and Tyler Cruz you mentioned have this issue, I know Big name Blogger (Problogger, Darren)… His blog is full of resource. Smashing Magazine another very good one ….
perhaps you should write about people shouldn’t read John Chow ………….
Some points I found contrary in the post … You said bigger blogs like Chow talks about their earning whereas smaller blogs also talk about their earnings (Progress).
I think no one can really teach you how to make money online. All one can do is put a gentle nudge and send you in the right direction by giving you web-development tips and share my experience.

I have to agree. I love reading a lot of the small to medium time bloggers. They seem to have so much more personality and I can relate better to them.
However I do have a few A-list bloggers that I subscribe, because of their great content.
