John Cow was Just Milking Us!!!
Posted on April 10th, 2008 by Reid under Make Money OnlineAs many of you know, there is a lot of quick money to be made online. Proxies, MFA sites, content writing, etc can earn you some decent money for a short while. There are other ways of making a very nice long term income online, and one of those is blogging.
JohnCow.com launched in July 2007 as a parody of JohnChow.com, and quickly became a very popular blog. It was obvious from the beginning that ‘The Cow’ was going to milk the blog for the money, but hey, thats what all of us are online for. The blog has earned a very modest income in the range of $2,500 a month, not including its sponsorships (a dedicated server and contest sponsorships), which the cow gets for free because of his fame.
The auction launched this morning on SitePoint with a starting price of $25,000 and a BIN of $50,000 (10 and 20 months revenue respectively). In only 10 months, John Cow has created a blog earning $30,000 a year, thats above the average income in many countries, just by posting an article once a day. You can read todays post with his reasons for selling.
Does this mean I would put in a bid on the blog? No way, at least I wouldn’t! Could you imagine the blog you could make if you had $25,000, even $5,000 to spend. I think that buying a ready to go blog would be a very poor idea. You could buy a premium domain, have a custom theme made, and market your site like crazy for far less the price of JohnCow.com.
I wish John Cow the best of luck selling his blog, I’m sure the site will receive some bids, but I certainly won’t be bidding on it. Now I just have to make sure my blog hits that level =D

I think I would hold onto the site and keep milking, its not time to send this cow out to pasture…

So, how come you’ve left a comment (second actually) in our post saying that you WOULD put in a bid if you had the money? You’re confusing us.

Guess I thought about and $25,000 is a lot of money. In starting a site, $25,000 can go a long ways. Don’t get me wrong at all John, you have a great blog, I read it every day, am an RSS subscriber, etc, but after thinking about your sale, I think there would be a better use for $25,000. Don’t worry though, you got bids already.

I dunno if I would bid on it, I’m kinda agreeing with Reid on this one. I love his blog though, kinda makes me sad that its selling : (.

I’ll never understand why someone would buy a blog. Sure, it gets a lot of traffic now, but what happens when the author leaves? Poof, gone.

@Rob - Yeah, its too bad, I really liked it. It will be interesting to see how the new owner runs the place.
@ Geoff - I find its best to start a blog on something that interests you. Everyone has a unique style of writing and unique interests. I’m interested in aviation and I’m incorporating it in this blog, but it would be hard for some people to write about the topics I’m interested in.
A great example which Jason showed me was CashQuests, I guess someone paid $18,000 for the blog and no-one liked the new owner and the site became a lot less popular after that.

hi,i like your blog

The cow is not going to pasture rather the owner is in for a big move, cross continent type deal and instead of micro manage it while dealing with all the finite details of changing your citizenship he has made a move to offload this.
What will be interesting is weather or not this site will continue to succede as it is right now. It is going to be an interesting ride for john cow readers for sure!

These comments got Da Hustler to thinking…is a blog more for the reader or the blog owner? We know that the major benefactor will be the owner, so should you get into blogging to build up your site’s value, then sell, or stay in it for the long run once you have a steady stream of visitors? $2.5k/mo could easily turn into $10k, maybe get others involved, put together a team and see what else you can do to raise it up. If you can do that much on your own, imagine what a whole team can do (and consequently you don’t suffer from burn out). Hustle smart.

These are all publicity stunts…I’d put ten bucks down on Cow controlling the domain again in a month.
